In year 1940, after demise of Chhatrapati Rajaram, Kolhapur constituency was managed by council. Queen Tararani was regent of this council at that time. To continue the legacy of educational development work started by Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the management and responsibility was handed over to Kolhapur municipal corporation on 24th September, 1942. According to the regulations devised in 1942, education committee came into existence on 21st December 1942 with subsequent elections. When organization merged into Mumbai region, education committee got transformed into Municipal school board on 9th June 1948 conforming to the Mumbai primary education act, 1947. |

In true sense, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj opened the door of education before 70-80 years. It was open for every caste and religion. He spent large amount generously.Not only he built boardings for them but also donated boarding expenditures and land permanently which is why one can see Kolhapur evolved as home of education, art, sports. Kolhapur is recognised as rich, art-loving, sports-loving, industrious, and a city with bounties of natural beauties in south Maharashtra.
Government has started revised syllabus from 1968. From eighth standard, the emphasis was given on English, Mathematics and Science. To train teachers in the syllabus contents, every year short duration courses are run through S.M.T.T College, D. Ed. College, Vatsaladevi Junior training college. Regulaly, batches of teachers are sent for such training. Similarly, training workshops are arranged by Education officer.
There are short term courses by education board also with the help of Private highschool, Maharashtra highschool, D. Ed. college. For the students of 5th to 7th standard short term courses are run for English subject. Science lectures of trained teachers are arranged as per N. C. E. R. T. scheme. Government supplies latest scientific equipment to some schools. It is proposed to start 25 full fledged science laboratories at various places in the city. Up till now, such laboratories are started in 7-8 schools. There are 200 trained teachers in N.C.E.R.T. syllabus with school board for 3rd to 7th standard.
All area in the Kolhapur corporation is brought under compulsory primary education and large scale public awareness programs are being conducted. The age limit for primary education is 6 to 11 years and compulsory primary education is only from first to forth standard.

Minimum of 1000 girls have been admitted through Late. Savitribai Phule adopted children scheme. Efforts are being taken to increase this number and all the teachers are constantly engaged in these efforts.
